Summer Comes, Winter Goes

Summer Comes, Winter Goes

"Summer comes, winter goes, spring I skip, God knows".

The title quote is an excerpt from one of my favourite songs by Lana del Rey, called "Blue Banisters". When I first heard it in October 2021, I thought that it sounded like exactly what healing felt like.

Renewable Energy x Software Engineering

Finishing off this article

Software is at the heart of everything that we do now. From ordering food, to doing our shopping, to tracking and monitoring our health, to planning our travel, and booking our trips.

It is inescapable; it is the future.

In any case, all companies are using software now to compete against each other and to try and get the competitive edge on each other. Therefore, why should renewable energy be any different?

Should it be competitive, though?

I get the need for competition in business. I am not against that. But for solutions like the smart grid; is it about businesses competing against each other? I suppose the argument is that competition drives innovation. It motivates people and drives growth. Who is responsible for the achieving of the smart grid? I don't know that. Is it a public sector thing? Is it private companies? Consultancies? Or is it this whole crazy thing that we call the energy industry. All of its different parts. Part competing, part collaborating. Is that how we get there? Is competition or collaboration better? Openness and honesty?

Investing

According to this article, many people are investing in green software because as part of the wider domain of software it represents "an affordable, scalable form of investment for businesses and governments." As the other article I was reading said, investing in software, over hardware, technologies reduces physical wastes in the material realm.

This article mentions competition. It argues that this competition is driving innovation in software engineering. And more importantly, it is driving investment. The article says that "over time" software development will become a more viable solution for driving change in the renewable energy tech industry than hardware. But, again, according to the previous article - isn't that already the case??!

What The Future Holds

As software gets more and more advanced, more and more apps exist that are easily downloaded and can be widely used. Remotely being able to control hardware devices via good software has also made a really great change. As the renewable energy transition is one of the hot topics of our society today, and the success of this transition really relies on our ability to use and manage our grid to the very best of our abilities, software development really is at the very heart of this transition.
