“Something has changed within me”: Listening back to a problem solving call with my boss

I had a beautiful evening today. After smashing it out and producing some excellent frontend tickets, I found the time to meditate today. I even had time to dance! And I even spoke to my grandmother. But apart from those wonderful things I managed to find the time to listen back to my problem solving call from two days ago and it was so worth it. We approached a new problem together and I applied all of my new problem solving skills and he asked me some amazing questions. It was an absolute 10/10 problem solving session.

What do I wanna do? What is the problem? Do you know what this is talking about? These three questions are written on a poster in large messy handwriting on Susanna’s bedroom wall

There was loads said and loads done but the most helpful of all were the three above questions. Before I dive into that I just wanna say the result was a beautiful neat set of notes for the ticket. I mean I have never had that before. My notes were such chaos. But with these three questions alone I wrote a beautiful stunning set of notes and found my independence. Suddenly I didn’t need my boss anymore. 

I had found my independence; I had found it. I was able to come up with solutions to my problems alone. And all I needed to do was just trust myself more. And so the three main questions were
  • Based on my notes from my other wall poster, I felt that the main question I had to ask myself was “What do I wanna DO?”
  • I also asked myself “What is the problem here?” Because that felt traditional
  • It’s not in the picture but later on I also asked myself  “given input x, what are the steps needed to return output Y?”
  • This changed everything - when working with a complex business problem that really is a game changer
  • But also I loved it when my boss said “do you know what this is talking about?” And he meant about the ticket. But it was so good to get super specific

Yosemite I'll never forget the first time I head the song Yosemite by Lana del Rey. I very nearly clicked away.  It was quite near the start of my Software Engineering journey, right near when I start learning the Front-End/Web Development. I was listening to Arcadia by LDR before, maybe twice, and then Blue Banisters came on. I nearly clicked away in the first 30 seconds but I forced myself to keep listening anyway.  I'll never forget how that song has made me feel. It became my song of 2022 even though I only discovered it in November. I can still listen to it every day and get that complete sense of wonder and of awe that I felt the first time that I heard it. Where To Hide A Star I haven’t read this book but I just saw this title of a forthcoming children’s book on the train and so I wanted to write a blog post based off of this as well. The last six months have been… rewarding and fulfilling. I have managed to make all of my dreams come true and to defy expectations,  Sometimes the best place to hide is in plain sight and if you reread all of my blogs over the last six months (all 200 of them) you would know exactly what I’m struggling at work and what was going on. And why. But I’ve managed to overcome most of my challenges. Neurodiversity. Being very new in the field relative to the expectations of the job. Being in a new workplace environment.
