“It is ok to not know how to do something your job is to figure it out”

It is ok to not know how to do something your job is to figure it out. This is some of the best feedback I have ever received in my entire life.

It is also an amazing software engineering tip too. Really. Like seriously. For everyone.

One of the biggest ways I have messed up in my software engineering role is by being afraid of not knowing what to do. “This has happened. I’ve messed up.” That’s okay. My job is to figure out how to do it. “I don’t know how to do this with Alembic.”

That’s okay. It’s my job to figure out how to do it. That’s the point of being a software engineer. It’s the whole job. Being comfortable with the unknown
