Sitting Still Through A VSCode Course, Part 1

Sitting Still Through A VSCode Course, Part 1

I am watching videos. NOT my Susanna AuDHD comfort zone. Actually, it's my idea of hell. I am an interactive learner. I am an active learner. I am a prosumer of knowledge. I cannot sit still. So I'm going to just write this during the parts when I have to listen and sit still. If I need to take notes by hand I'll do that. If I need to take a break I'll do that. If I need to alternate with other tasks I will

Oh great so where is the course website. Found it

After a year of Pycharm:

Goals
  • Getting around the editor
  • Becoming familiar with repetitive tasks
  • creating consistent development environments
Right, here I am.

Part 1

I have sped him up a bit at first as I am too bored. We are in a project but I don't know what's going on.

What project is this?

Anyway the first thing they are doing is exactly what I got stuck on yesterday. WHOOPS.

Command shift P is the command pallette. Okay great. There is a course repo but it is not required to clone it. I can use my own repo. My work repo is brand new to me. Lets' see how it goes.

You can open files with:
  • code . in the terminal
  • or just "open" in files or whatever
We can obviously see what the files in the repo are.

Okay so we can see some cool sidebars.

Explorer, search, source control, run and debug, extensions and other cool stuff that might appear on the side - depending on your EXTENSIONS.

I cannot wait to make a pretty picture to illustrate this post. As soon as possible. I also have a strong desire to watch some fun TV shows - either Buffy or Angel. ANYWAY. Stuff at the bottom of the IDE.

There is also a clicky way if you ever forget command shift p (yeah right).

A futurustic looking and pink-ish picture

Part 2

Information overload

ANYTIME I CATCH MYSELF DOING SOMETHING TEDIOUS

PAUSE

HIT COMMAND SHIFT P

TRY AND SEARCH FOR THIS

AHA YES AHA

AHA THANK YOU AHA

SO BORED AHA

I probably won't memorise things

It's better to repeat. Instil the habit. If I catch myself being more and repetitive - if I want to grab the mouse or jump to the other pane

Or search

PAUSE. GO TO THE COMMAND PALETTE. IF I HOVER OVER THINGS - THEY WILL SHOW ME THE KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS.

I FEEL BORED AND I WANT TO LOOK AT THE KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS COURSE. UM - HMMMM.

SO I CAN EVEN SORT LINES ASCENDING AND DESCENDING IN THE COMMAND PALETTE UM OKAY YES AH. The whole point here is to stay focused on the big problems.

And not waste time on the little thought IDE stuff. SO THAT IS THE THEME OF THIS COURSE

NICE I ALWAYS LIKE AN UNDERLYING THEME

WHAT

  • COMMAND SHIFT P
  • TYPE SPLIT
  • SPLIT EDITOR
Wait, what

Code folding

Level of folding folders

Wait, arrrrgh

This is too much for me

Thanks
