Pragmatic Communication, part 2; Choosing your time, part A

Pragmatic Communication, part 2; Choosing your time, part A

I am beyond exhausted but I still want to write (owing to a huge amount going on in my personal life, I don’t want to share more here). I am finding that breaking these down as small as possible helps. Somehow, just like with tickets and commits, making my blog posts as small as possible really helps!!! Apparently when communicating with someone you should choose the best time

And I wondered whether I do this or not. So as a kid. You know that when your parent is tired or in a bad mood (remembering the one thing we never understood as kids: that parents are humans like you and me), you don’t ask for money or a special thing then.

So how does that work in software? I have become a lot better at communicating with managers over the years. With time I learned to put big issues in a 1:1 management doc to raise stuff in my weekly 1:1. Might sound crazy but pre product and software we didn’t have 1:1 docs to queue things up in. So I sent random messages and random times. Sorry guys.

And I think if I am about to ask for something I try not to put it right after eg if I were to be complaining about something (not that I do that a lot). Now thinking about LinkedIn and social media

If you want to get zero likes on your post, post on a Saturday (on LinkedIn anyway). There are some random times that work really well - what is up with Friday lunchtime? And some evening times work but it makes no sense

There is a sweet spot but I couldn’t really write it down for you. I just hit it sometimes

One more thing. I had a few issues I needed to raise with a team in the last few weeks. I got a bit uncomfortable as I was raising them in the heat of the moment and it did not feel like the right time. But then I raised it in a retro and it felt more appropriate. So that felt better

I do not like to say this but it goes both ways

If someone wants to have a meeting with me it will make me especially upset if I have to put it in my coding time (if it is not coding related). Better to wait until I have a “white slot” in my calendar

My coding time is sacred to me
